Guess I'm still moving through the Classics for the first time. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has been on a list to try for quite a while.

Known as having made an extraordinary impact on our popular culture and the foundations of Science Fiction, Mary Shelley is a profound female literary creative. My already there love of science fiction, research insurance from others who enjoyed it and I need to support the other long after her life, moved me to finally gain a copy.

Also great thanks to my stepfather for fueling my love of books. Especially in the recent years.

What I WasThinking Initially?

The story starts off as a character named Walton goes on an expedition of scientific, geographical discovery to the far north whilst writing his sister. Upon which trip he comes across an an odd occurrence. It leads him to see a Monster and then soon after a man. When he saves the man that brings on the story of how such a wanderer managed to need aid in the first place.

And so ensues the story that Frankenstein tells to Walton.

What worked? What didn't?

The slow start at the beginning in which Frankenstein tells his tail starts at childhood which is a little further back then necessary. At first I was bored with such a tail up until the part where he decides to talk about passing of his mother right before he goes out to college.

I think that that information is vital as it shows his transgression between is different types of scientific discovery and research over the course of his time at the University. It's slowly becomes something of a frantic state that allows him to ignore family matters. It also allows you to see the transformation into his thought processes behind the dead; his obsession with life and death grows.

That's when it gets to the good part about him frantic studying this new thought. Then the creature itself.

Preferred was the pov of Frankenstein to that of his creation because it reflects the horrific determination and contemplation within his mind. An emotional roller coaster with dark undertone. That of the monster is a bit slow at first not giving much contribution up until the feeling of rejection he felt in smaller scenes and with that of the family he was watching.

I also don't like how the quick change of heart took place to murder.

What truly worked within Frankenstein's pov was the threatening nature of the creature coupled with it's desire for acceptance.

Another good piece of it was a warning by the creature when Frankenstein destroyed the second creature before finishing & how it added up later.

Not technically a spoiler because this story has been out since the 1800s but if you waited forever like me, here is a warning.

Ps. Bonus points if you know the show the GIF is from.

Electric Conclusion

My overall impression of the book was that some things really worked for me. Enjoyed visiting it despite the slow start along with a few scenes drawn out. It certainly wasn't as interesting as Dracula or a 5 star but it still has merit that lives on today.

For my rating...4 ⭐️.

Did YOU read it? What did YOU think?
