Welcome back to Writing with Sprinkle!
I'm BH Sprinkle & I'm ready to have this discussion on why writing feels so personal.
Let's discuss our emotions and what makes writing so personal.
What feelings it creates?
Writing evokes many feelings within the reader but do you ever notice what it places in the mind and heart of a writer.
Do you ever notice that one line hitting too close to home? Or that one that sounds like the wisdom you need at the moment?
What about getting angry about something the character goes through because it's happened to you? Or feeling joy when a character finally reaches something they want or something secure?
WRITING IS PERSONAL. It evokes emotions or relatablility within the reader and the person writing it.
How much of ourselves we put into it?
It's not a plan to copy your own thoughts onto the characters you create or use scenes of familiar places, sometimes people do that on purpose but let's say it's not always the case.
Sometimes it's the small details of our lives like our favorite colors, numbers, or food. Sometimes it's something bigger, such as a personality trait.
We put a lot of ourselves into it. Experiences, emotions, personality traits, locations. Occasionally it just spills in somehow.
Time It Takes
Not only do we put a bit of ourselves into our narratives but we also know it takes so much time. Time to write and time to get it published. Time to get it into the hands of readers as well.
Several years go by for quite a number of writers to draft multiple drafts of their work and performance of all those edits. Even if you move quickly. It takes several months to years to get published. Unless you're a previous NY Times lister or have previous best selling books. Or you’re a celebrity or have money. Yes, we all try not to think on how unfair it is. It's just how it is but with a dedication to our passion we persist and dream. Getting your work into the hands of readers takes time as well. You have to talk about yourself and your book. IT TAKES COURAGE TO DO.
JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING TAKES TIME DOESN'T MEAN IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. IT JUST MEANS YOU HAVE TO GIVE MORE FOR WHAT YOU WANT.
Opinions of Others
You will have to ignore a great many naysayers along the way. To ignore the hurtful comments and use some to build yourself up better. To build your work and improve it.
There's always going to be some doubt in others or in your own mind, you can't let it control where you're going.
Does your writing feel personal?
Always, interested to see your thoughts. If this resonates with you, DROP A COMMENT.
